toadshade

Trillium sessile

These trillium plants prefer shady areas and grow naturally in local wooded areas. During the spring they grow a single red or purplish flower with 3 petals and sepals in a closed posture. Their roots rest deep into the soil and the herbaceous plant grows upward to the surface by a rhizome. These native perennials are surprisingly long-lived for their seemingly small size as well. Toadshade will spread slowly over years underground via rhizomes to form colonies. Being a trademark native spring ephemeral, these plants emerge early in the spring before most others and then go dormant around mid-summer before re-emerging the following spring.
