These trees grow at a rate of about 1 foot a year, and prefer rich, moist, and well-drained soils. While they are considered slow-growing, they can grow faster when grown in sunnier sites. Adding to this tree’s high cultural impact, it is also known for being depicted as the leaf on the flag of Canada, and it’s also the state tree for 4 U.S. states.
