sugar maple
Acer saccharum
Famous for the sweet Maple Syrup that this tree produces easier than other trees, Sugar Maple is a common sight in both untouched woodlands and in residential yards. These native deciduous trees are very shade tolerant, often thriving in the dark understory of a forest until a sunny opening appears that allows them to spring upward. These trees grow at a rate of about 1 foot a year, and prefer rich, moist, and well-drained soils. While they are considered slow-growing, they can grow faster when grown in sunnier sites. Adding to this tree’s high cultural impact, it is also known for being depicted as the leaf on the flag of Canada, and it’s also the state tree for 4 U.S. states.
