pin oak
Quercus palustris
This fast-growing native Oak tree is valued as an ornamental tree due to its manageable size and brilliant fall color, ranging between scarlet red, orange-red, and bronze. Pin Oak (also commonly known as Swamp Spanish Oak) is not tolerant of shade and thrives best in moist, clay-rich soils common in wet bottomlands. This tree could also be a good choice for compacted clay soils, which often disqualify many tree species. While it can tolerate sandy, loamy, and occasionally dry soils, it prefers consistent moisture. Pin Oaks have shallow root systems and are also tolerant of urban air pollution. Along with many other native Oaks, they are desirable lumber sources. Pin Oaks are valuable to native ecosystems, with their acorns being important food sources for many animal species, including mallards and ducks, which also makes them very desirable for waterfowl hunting. The Pin Oak’s unique status as a wet-tolerant, showy Oak species with a non-overbearing size makes it a popular choice for street trees, restoration projects of low areas, and ornamental plantings.
