northern red oak

Quercus rubra

Northern Red Oak is a popular native ornamental shade tree due to its breathtaking red fall coloring, its fast growth rate, and its large symmetrical shape. Northern Red Oak is also an extremely vital lumber source, and along with White Oak (Quercus alba), it is one of the two most commercially important Oak trees in North America. They can grow 2 or more feet a year after getting established and can reach maximum heights of around 100 feet. Their imposing size, fast growth rate, and stunning fall coloring make them a perfect native tree for ornamental applications where a large shade tree is desired. Like other native Oak species, its acorns are an important food source for native wildlife, and hundreds of caterpillar species are supported by it.
