butterfly weed
Asclepias tuberosa
This iconic native milkweed perennial is popular in many gardens and landscapes due to its dense, numerous, and bright-orange flowers. While earning its name by attracting a variety of native butterflies and their larva, this vital prairie plant is also a magnet to bees and other pollinators. Butterfly weed is intolerant of shade, and while it can be adaptive to different soil types besides its preference for dry soil, too much consistent moisture can cause crown and root rot. Butterfly Weed, also referred to as Butterfly Milkweed, is not to be confused with the different and non-native Butterfly Bush.
