new england aster

Symphyotrichum novae-angliae

Popular, showy, and vibrant purple flowers form a magnificent canvas across a landscape from this native wildflower species during late summer and early fall. Native pollinators, including Monarch Butterflies, are drawn to the nectar of this flower in the late growing season. New England Asters are pretty tolerant of different soil types with the exception of consistently dry soils or waterlogged soils. Pruning the main stalks before late summer can prevent the flower from reaching its potential 6 foot height and result in a bushier appearance.
