little bluestem
Schizachyrium scoparium
Growing in popularity as an easy care ornamental plant, this perennial prairie-grass is native to a large range of the U.S. and Canada. Little Bluestem is useful for prairie restoration projects due to its adaptability, and for grazing of horses and cattle. It provides nesting and nutritional value for various prairie birds. Full sun is preferred for planting, and these grasses can tolerate dryness. Note that Little Bluestem will grow more tall and upright in full sun, and even though it tolerates a little shade, it may flop or not be as upright if planted there versus full sun.
