flowering dogwood

Cornus florida

Flowering Dogwood is a very popular native ornamental tree due to its dramatic white coloration in the early spring and its manageable size. An early-bloomer, this tree paints the early spring landscape with an inviting canvas of white blooms, even before the leaves of most deciduous trees, including itself, emerge. It is very shade tolerant, often growing in the wild as an understory tree, but is optimally planted in part-shade to maximize growth and blooms. This tree can sometimes be tolerant of full sun, especially if it’s planted in a cooler northern climate and in moist, well-drained soil. Flowering Dogwood can grow to around 30 feet tall maximum with an equal spread and a moderate growth rate of around 1 to 2 feet a year. This tree produces red berries in the fall which are Not edible for humans, but are beloved by native birds, and can persist into the winter, adding more ornamental awe. Adding to the tree’s impressive aesthetic displays, the leaves also put on a stunning fall show, developing into bright shades of red, maroon, or purple.
