eastern white pine
Pinus strobus
This fast-growing native evergreen tree is a top pick for landscaping, habitat restoration, and lumber farming purposes and brings out refreshing green color to the otherwise dreary winter landscape. In the wild, Eastern White Pine can grow up to 150 feet tall or more, making this one of the tallest tree species in the eastern half of the U.S. However, in planted landscapes they often only grow to 80 feet maximum. They are valued as a lumber tree. The shedding of old needles acts as a sort of natural mulch in older trees. While growth is maximized with higher sunlight exposure, they also can live under a good amount of shade too. Eastern White Pine will grow in all soil types in its native range, including lower quality, but prefers well-drained sandy soils. There are multiple practical uses of this tree, including being used for a Christmas Tree, using its fresh needles to make a nutritious tea, using its dead needles for mulch, using its iconic pinecones for crafts and ornaments, foraging and eating its edible seeds, and more.
