eastern redbud

Cercis canadensis

Eastern Redbud is a highly popular ornamental tree due to its pink (sometimes purplish) early-blooming flowers and small manageable size. The early spring landscape is elegantly painted with the pink flowers of this tree, before both its own leaves and the leaves of most other deciduous trees start to appear. These native trees reach a maximum height of around 20 to 30 feet and are easy to maintain. Younger trees notably can grow fast and can begin producing flowers in the first few years of their life. Redbuds prefer full sun, and become less tolerant of shade as they age. Eastern Redbud is relatively hardy to different soil types, preferring average well-drained soil that stays moist. It does not do well in excessively dry soil, nor waterlogged or constantly flooded soils.
