eastern red columbine

Aquilegia canadensis

Eastern Red Columbine is an iconic native flowering perennial known for its bright red & yellow flowers and being a magnet for hummingbirds and other pollinators. Its distinctive downward bell-shaped flowers emerge in the springtime, and the foliage of this plant is fern-like, delicate, and sometimes takes a bluish color tone. In the wild, Eastern Red Columbine thrives best in wooded areas with partial shade and rocky soil, but this hardy plant can be quite versatile. The leaves may be considered semi-evergreen, meaning they often remain on the plant during winter, as long as winter temperatures never get extremely cold.
