eastern black walnut

Juglans nigra

Eastern Black Walnut is valued and very popular for its high timber value and its tasty walnuts that drop in the fall. These native trees prefer full sun, grow fast (up to 3 feet a year when established), and can start producing good amounts of nuts within 7 years of age. As an edible plant, the actual walnuts from Eastern Black Walnut are often considered the most healthy of all walnut species. The nuts are described as having a bolder taste than the more commercially-popular English Walnut. The roots of these trees produce a substance called juglone, which may be harmful to certain nearby plants. However, juglone toxicity is a controversial subject, with many claiming that the threat is overstated due to inadequate research and the gap between the controlled environments used by researchers and the tree’s natural environment where high concentrations of juglone accumulating is a more rare phenomenon than in a research lab. If you’d rather be safe than sorry, research the species of plants you want to put a black walnut tree by to see if they are susceptible.
