cinnamon Fern

Osmunda cinnamomea

Cinnamon Fern is a dramatically attractive ornamental fern with a vase-shaped profile of graceful green fronds forming a circle around the central cinnamon-colored spore-bearing fronds. This prehistoric fern species is native to our area and has a huge natural (or native) range that extends across North America and also to parts of the Caribbean, South America, and East Asia. Being a fern, this plant does not bloom flowers, but instead develops prominent fertile fronds from April to June which release the spores that ferns use to reproduce. These spore-bearing fronds are shaped and colored like long narrow cinnamon sticks, earning the plant its name. Cinnamon Ferns are typically found in the wild growing in wet shaded sites, but it is possible to plant them in full sun sites if they are constantly wet or in standing water.
