christmas fern

Polystichum acrostichoides

Christmas Fern is an evergreen perennial fern that gets its name due to its persistent green foliage that stands out during Christmas time and beyond. This native fern grows in a low clumping profile in moist shady spots and is one of the most popular native ferns due to its evergreen status, its manageable size, and that it’s easy to grow. It tends to spread more slowly than more aggressive ferns such as Ostrich Ferns, and its shiny green frond foliage is more scaly and leathery than silky and feathery like other native ferns. Often found in the wild on wooded slopes, this fern species also makes an excellent erosion control plant or an ornamental for sloped landscapes. Consistently wet spots should be avoided for planting, which can result in crown rot.
