Cardinal flower
Lobelia cardinalis
Cardinal Flower is a stunning native perennial that is iconic for its bright and eye-catching crimson red flowers that bloom in the summer and fall and for attracting hummingbirds, which act as its primary pollinators. Butterflies and bees may also be attracted to the flowers. Cardinal Flower is known for thriving in wet environments and can make an aesthetically pleasing landscape plant on water edges or otherwise unforgiving wet spots. Sandy or consistently dry soils should be avoided, as Cardinal Flower is naturally a wetland plant. Partial shade is ideal, but these plants are known to be tolerant of full sun and heavy shade, depending on the climate and moisture level. Cardinal Flowers are even known to flourish in aquariums!
