brown-eyed susan

Rudbeckia triloba

Brown-Eyed Susan is a cheerful, fast-growing native that puts on a spectacular late-season show. Clouds of small golden-yellow flowers with rich dark centers bloom by the dozens, creating a bright, airy look from mid-summer into fall. The flowers are noted to differ slightly from other Rudbeckia species by their shorter, rounder petals. Much like Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta), this native wildflower grows as a short-lived perennial or biennial, but it readily self-sows and fills in naturally. Brown-Eyed Susan was also utilized as a medicinal herb by Native Americans. It is easy to grow, pollinator-friendly, drought tolerant, and is perfect for ornamental gardening, wild restoration plantings, or wherever you want bold color with minimal effort.
