Black-Eyed susan
Rudbeckia hirta
Perhaps one of the most popular and noticeable ornamental wildflowers, Black-Eyed Susan is an example of a native plant species establishing itself deep into mainstream gardening & landscaping culture. Its numerous and long-blooming yellow flowers are a top reason why this plant is popular, along with its hardiness, shorter more manageable size, and the low skill and maintenance needed to plant and care for it. As a valuable native forb species, Black-Eyed Susans’ flowers attract many pollinators, whereas their seeds attract many birds too. They are also popular in cut flower arrangements and bouquets, and it is also known that Native Americans consumed the plant (usually in the form of tea or soup) for its medicinal values too. Black-Eyed Susans are considered short-lived perennials or biennials, since they often live 2 to 5 years, but their prolific re-seeding will keep their population stable wherever they are grown. They are tolerant and hardy to a wide variety of soil types and are drought tolerant once established.
